P. J. Hoffmaster State Park offers over a thousand acres for recreation.
Description - Tucked between Lake Michigan and Little Black Lake, P. J. Hoffmaster State Park has many natural attractions. Over a thousand acres of lakeside property feature rolling sandy dunes and woodland settings. The park is inhabited by a variety of upland, shoreline and aquatic birds. Raptors can be seen soaring on the air currents of the dunes when winds are from the east.

Attractions - P. J. Hoffmaster State Park is thoroughly enjoyed for its water related sports. Visitors enjoy Lake Michigan swimming and shore fishing along more than two miles of beachfront. The day use area provides picnic sites in a natural wooded setting, a picnic shelter available for group rental, and two buoyed swimming areas. The campground offers 293 sites, each with electric hookup. Modern bathhouse facilities and a sanitation station are provided. Camping facilities are open April 1 to December 1 with modern bathhouses open April 15 through November 1.

The Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center offers environmental education programs, nature exhibits and hands-on displays that explore dune ecology and the Great Lakes. Art exhibits are featured as well.

With more than 10 miles of trails, the casual hiker or the serious student of nature will find a variety of interesting natural features. A main attraction is the Dune Climb Stairway leading to the top of a high sand dune. There, an observation deck offers a panoramic view of the dunes and Lake Michigan.

Cross-country skiing is enjoyed along a marked 3-mile cross-country trail requiring intermediate skill. More and more people find photography and snowshoeing to be enjoyable snow season pursuits. A word of caution, come prepared with suitable clothing for occasional severe weather conditions.

Recreation - Visitors to this lakeside park can enjoy swimming, fishing, viewing scenery, wildlife watching, hiking, cross-country skiing, picnicking, and playground fun. A visitor center serves as the heart of Hoffmaster's environmental education.

Climate - West Coast Michigan experiences pleasant summers with temperatures averaging 70 degrees F (21 degrees C). In winter, temperatures plunge to 22 degrees F (-6 degrees C). Lake winds have dramatic affect on wind chill factors. Yearly precipitation averages 40 inches and above. A word of caution, come prepared with suitable clothing for occasional severe weather conditions.

Location - P. J. Hoffmaster State Park is located five miles west of Fruitport, MI

Report: Today I took a day a day trip to P.J. HOFFMASTER STATE PARK. I skipped the t-shirt and purchased a sweatshirt instead in the gift shop at the Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center. The sumac was bright red giving us our first indications that fall is upon us. For a seasonal color tour in the next few weeks I would highly reccomend this trip. The visitor center mevtioned above is open until 5PM and I love nature and history, and I found both. The history of the region and many things not often seen outdoors can be seen indoors at the Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center. I found it to be an excellent opportunity for me to see yet another wonder of nature in Michigan. We so often travel thousands of miles to Ireland or Hawaii to see the beauty and wonder in nature. Don't forget if you seek a 'Pleasant Pennisula' look around you and bring a camera (I forgot mine).
